Over the years

Welcome

Clifford Drama Group was started in 1967 by a group of people who enjoyed acting, set building rehearsing and socialising, and 45 years later we are still acting setbuilding and socialising.  Amateur Drama is alive in Clifford!

We started out with plays, entertainments and pantomimes. The pantomimes were written in rhyming couplets (have you ever tried to ad lib a rhyming couplet when you have forgotten your lines) by Jean Johnson a long standing member of the group, and latterly by Pauline and Jack Winterburn.

We made the costumes, typed the programmes, built the stage, made the teas (we still do make the teas), and organised the publicity.

We have a wonderful back stage team who can turn their hands to anything from a moving circular stage (Talking Heads) to a Colliery Head (Salt of the Earth) a working houseboat complete with over 60 sound effects (Way Upstream) exploding ovens (various pantomimes) to hand painted scenery like a Klimt Painting (Mr A's Amazing Maze) via a working hairdressing salon (Steel Magnolias) and a cooker used to fry eggs during the performance (Shirley Valentine) the - list is endless.

Until Homburgs closed its doors producers Pauling Winterburn, Susan Collinson and Andrea Seed spent many happy hours choosing just the right costume for a play or a pantomime.

We have a sound engineer a lighting man and set builders, we have people who man the tea bar and the wine bar and a  lady who makes money for local charities by selling raffle tickets at every performance, all because they all enjoy being involved.  Our active members come not only from Clifford, but from Boston Spa, Wetherby, Tadcaster and beyond.

If you would like to be involved in Amateur Theatre  why don't you join us ?

It has come to the Committee’s attention that not everyone who subscribed to the email is receiving one. We had no idea there was an error somewhere, so please if you do not receive April’s Newsletter and you have paid your subs, then let a committee member know and we can do something about it. Please don’t assume we have stopped doing them just because you don’t get one, it means there is a ‘blip’ in the proceedings.
